JOB PURPOSE: This is an entry level position at which the employee works in a learning capacity performing a range of work assignments and providing automotive labor support appropriate to the job in accordance with District safety guidelines and policies and procedures. The incumbent typically possesses the knowledge to do the job but lacks professional or recent experience in the field. Work is performed under general supervision and may be required to perform duties as directed by the Fleet Technician, Fleet Regional Technician or the Fleet Shop Foreman.
JOB FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job satisfactorily.
1. Follow checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined and inspect vehicles for serviceability, damage, tire wear, and safety defects. Perform lube, oil and filter change, check fluid levels, and lubrication on all PUD vehicles and equipment.
2. Perform light-duty electrical and wiring repairs, such as lights and repair of wiring of 12-volt systems. Perform repairs and maintenance on small engines and miscellaneous small tools and equipment (i.e., service truck generator/compressor, parts washer etc.).
3. Change and repair tires using equipment such as tire changer and wheel balancing equipment. Perform brake repair on light-duty vehicles. This includes turning of rotors and drums, packing of wheel bearings, and adjusting of brakes on all vehicles
4. Fueling, check fluid levels, record hours and mileage and on district vehicles and equipment. Fuel, wash, vacuum, and clean the District's motor pool vehicles.
5. Service and change batteries, including checking charging system and jump starting of vehicle if necessary
6. Assist other mechanics when necessary.
7. Maintain the garage work area and shop trucks in a clean and orderly fashion. Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance in automotive shop area, including emptying trash containers.
8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
9. Drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District.
10. Maintain regular and predictable attendance. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Comply with District policies. Complete all required training. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of those required, but reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Post-Secondary Education: No post-secondary education required.
Experience: Typically requires two (2) years diversified automotive, truck or equipment mechanic experience, or the equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Completion of specialized technical training in automotive and/or truck repair is preferred.
Requires CPR Certification and valid First Aid card within 90 days of hire.
Specific KSA's: A fully skilled incumbent will have the following specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge:
• Knowledge of construction, design, repair and adjustments on common types of vehicles and power operated equipment.
• Knowledge of both light and heavy-duty electrical systems in regard to their role in the proper functioning of components and equipment.
• Requires knowledge and understanding of the principles of operation of diesel fueled and gasoline internal combustion engines.Skills & Abilities:
• Ability to diagnose defects and failures on vehicles and power operated equipment.
• Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Complexity: Completes standard, routine tasks of limited scope. Applies technical knowledge and skills to tasks.
Decision Making: Follows established procedures and priorities. Escalates problems or issues to supervisor.
Computers & Equipment: A fully skilled incumbent will have the ability to utilize the following software, hardware, or equipment: To perform this job successfully, an individual is required to have basic knowledge of Maximo Asset Management; Microsoft Outlook; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Word; PC Hardware; PeopleSoft Time Entry/HRIS; General Office Equipment; GPS Equipment; heavy equipment; gas/diesel powered equipment; tire/wheel balancing equipment; overhead cranes; overhead hoist, vehicle/heavy equipment computerized diagnostic tools; general shop tools and equipment; power equipment; fuel truck; Welders and cutting equipment; all shop safety equipment and PPE; operate light duty vehicles to heavy duty trucks; operate light duty power operated equipment to heavy duty construction equipment.

A valid driver's license is required at hire. A valid Washington State driver's license is required within 30 days of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State, Class A Commercial Driver’s License with current medical card and air brake restriction removed. Must possess and maintain (within 60 days of position acceptance or obtaining a CDL) a Hazardous Material, Cargo Tanker.
