ABOUT THE POSITION:
This recruitment is to fill a management level classification assigned to the Transit Division of the Transportation and Public Works Department. Under general direction, incumbents oversee the daily operations of the City's fixed route transit system (CityBus); monitor, report and evaluate Bus Operator performance with regard to schedule adherence, courtesy and City regulations; provide direct and indirect supervision to Transit Service Representatives, maintenance and administrative support staff; and perform other duties as assigned. Transit Field Supervisors should be familiar with public transportation and be highly safety oriented.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:
- Knowledge of and prioritization of safety
- Two or more years of transit operations experience
- Experience directly supervising employees and resolving customer issues
- The ability to make decision quickly and efficiently
- Strong knowledge of all facets and functions of transit operations
- Strong problem-solving abilities
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within the team

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and participate in the daily operations of the City's fixed route transit system, including ensuring compliance with Federal and State laws governing transit operations;
- monitor on-time performance;
- assist Bus Operators in event of mechanical problems, route delays, and passenger-related problems;
- interact with customers at all levels and resolve issues appropriately;
- coordinate and follow-up on bus maintenance and repairs;
- investigate accidents and public complaints involving transit vehicles and employees;
- assist Bus Operators in preparation of accident reports;
- develop and conduct staff training and safety programs;
- select, train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff;
- monitor, report and evaluate manner in which Bus Operators operate the City's equipment;
- monitor and operate two-way radio system;
- investigate route restrictions such as road closures and prepare deviation;
- monitor ridership trends, and schedule available fleet to meet capacity demands;
- operate bus in service in emergency situations;
- participate in the scheduling of bus routes and route planning activities;
- inspect and report on location of bus stop signs and benches;
- prepare a variety of reports and maintain records relative to transit operations and activities;
- prepare weekly Bus Operator assignments, maintain vacation and time off requests, and supervise administrative support staff;
- manage Transit Mall and directly supervise Transit Service Representatives;
- coordinate bus and facility maintenance issues, and supervise Bus Service Workers and Skilled Maintenance Workers;
- train all new Bus Operators, and evaluate and design specific training programs to correct deficiencies;
- respond to accidents involving transit buses or other division vehicles;
- coordinate with other emergency responders and at the scene; and
- prepare and submit all related reports for review by risk management.
- Assist in the preparation and administration of the Division's operating budget;
- check and audit the accuracy of bus schedules and operating documents;
- perform, as needed, basic bus servicing;
- perform, as needed, basic farebox repairs;
- test trainees for required licenses in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles standards;
- verify licenses and certifications of Bus Operators;
- monitor and evaluate contracted services;
- and perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Sufficient years of experience in the transit field to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above; and Education - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months of employment, a valid California Class B motor vehicle operator's license with Passenger Endorsement and a valid Medical Certificate. |
