Career Advancement: Engineering Tech II (Inspection/Design)
On-the-Job Training: The Engineering Tech will receive hands-on training from experienced staff on how to conduct inspections of streets, sewers, & other public works projects, ensuring compliance with approved plans. Guidance will be provided in preparing designs & cost estimates, utilizing GIS software for drafting & asset management. To become proficient in fieldwork, our team will provide instruction on performing construction & land surveys. This position will learn how to interact with contractors, developers, & the public to address technical engineering matters. Additionally, the City of Salina offers support & resources to help obtain Class B CDL & KDOT construction inspection certification within the first year.
Duties:
·Prepares routine designs, plans, specifications & bid documents for approval; makes preliminary estimates of work & material required; prepares cost computations.
·Inspects for the installation of street, curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm, sanitary sewer, water main, bridges & other public works projects for compliance with approved plans & specifications; prepares as-built drawings, maps & plans; files & maintains engineering records.
·Performs simple to moderately complex engineering drafting & design work utilizing computer aided drafting methods & GIS-based programs.
·Completes and/or interprets construction plans for a wide variety of engineering projects.
·Advises developers, builders, utility companies & property owners in engineering matters.
·Conducts traffic counts, speed studies, turning movements & assists in other traffic engineering related duties.
·Maintains asset management & information systems including geographic information systems.
·Responds to weather & other emergencies.
Education:
·High school diploma or G.E.D.
·Two (2) years course work in engineering technology or related field
·Must obtain construction inspection verification from KDOT within one (1) year from start date of employment.
Experience: Two (2) years’ work, education or training in civil engineering field work &/or drafting.
Requirements:
·Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license at hire.
·Possession of a valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake & tanker endorsements, or obtain within one (1) year from the start date of employment.
Work Type: Medium, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Machines, Tools, Equipment: Calculator, computers, construction materials testing equipment, drafting tools, mobile phone, surveying instruments, telephone, & vehicle.
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Starting pay: $18.08-20.93/hr. DOQ EOE
·Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
·48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
·96 hours of sick leave during first year.
